چکیده

ANTOINE LAVOISIER FAThER OF mOdERN chEmISTRy Antoine Laurent Lavoisier (1743-1794) was born in Paris. One of the great figures in science, he is often called father of modern chemistry. Priestly, in 1774 had heated brick red calx (mercuric oxide), obtaining back mercury, and in addition a combustible gas, with most unusual properties, He called it “dephlogisticated air” (oxygen). It was held that combustible objects, were rich in phlogiston (Greek -to set on fire) and the process of combustion involved loss of phlogiston. However, the phlogiston theory could not explain many things.

Imaging the experiments on respiration and transpiration of Lavoisier and Séguin: two unknown drawings by Madame Lavoisier.

This paper presents two hitherto unknown drawings by Marie-Anne-Pierrette Lavoisier dating to the early 1790s that illustrate the experiments on respiration and transpiration of her husband Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier and his assistant Armand Séguin. These works may be associated with the well-known sepia drawings that were published for the first time by Edouard Grimaux in 1888. Details containe...

Organization of the Respiratory System

For millennia, people have regarded life as being synonymous with breathing. Life begins and ends with breathing. The Bible states that God " breathed into [Adam's] nostrils the breath of life, " and then later used part of Adam's ventilatory apparatus — a rib — to give life to Eve. In the fourth and fifth centuries BC, writings attributed to Hippocrates suggested that the primary purpose of br...

Antoine-Laurent de Lavoisier (1743-1794) and the birth of respiratory physiology.

BACKGROUND For more than 1500 years, the status of knowledge concerning the physiology of human respiration has remained almost unchanged. In the 18th century, the French chemist Antoine-Laurent de Lavoisier conducted breathing experiments on human and animal respiration. METHODS The main bibliographic sources concerning Lavoisier's life and work on respiration have been investigated and anal...

Elements, Principles and the Narrative of Affinity

In the eighteenth century, the concept of ‘affinity’, ‘principle’ and ‘element’ dominated chemical discourse, both inside and outside of the laboratory. Although much work has been done on these terms and the methodological commitments which guided their usage, most studies over the past two centuries have concentrated on their application as relevant to Lavoisier’s oxygen theory and the new no...
